Professional Development for Teachers

Multiculturalism and Storytelling

“Multiculturalim and Storytelling” is a website developed from CDA’s professional development program for Utah public school teachers called, “Multiculturalism and Storytelling.” The class was created in 1999 by CDA and the SLC School District to use
CDA’s publications to introduce teachers to Utah’s diverse society and to guide them to explore it and develop new methods to teach their students of its complexity and richness.

The class included an action research component that provided teachers with research tools to evaluate and improve their teaching techniques.  “Multiculturalim and Storytelling” contains twenty-four lesson plans, selected from seven years of class work, focused equally on elementary, intermediate, and high school students and summaries of six action research projects. The website aims to encourage a problem-solving oriented conversation on teaching about culture and multiculturalism; on exploring the origins and development of our diverse society; on providing activities that explore civic, human, and environmental rights issues at home and abroad; and on sharing effective lesson plans and action research projects that were developed by teachers taking CDA’s, “Multiculturalism and Storytelling” class between 2000-2006.
